White-winged Scoter

As rare as are visits of loons to Norwood, the white-winged scoter seen here might be even more rare. A group of 14 scoter stopped for a short visit on May 15 2020 (by coincidence the same day that 14 loons also stopped by (see the loons page for more pictures of those birds). I have seen loons most years I have lived by the pond, this is the first time I have seen this species of scoter. I hope it is not the last, I'd like to get some better pictures; these were at close to the limit of what I can do with my camera.

The final photograph in this album was taken on May 26, 2020 when I encountered three of the scoter while out in my kayak. So, at least some of them have stayed longer than I thought.
