The Ospreys of River Road - 2021

DSCN2532.jpg

The opening picture on this page really was taken on April 1, 2021. As you will see, it wasn't the only time the ospreys must have wondered what they were doing back in the North Country!

The pictures in this album are from early April.

This was a failed attempt to copulate.

This was another failed attempt to copulate.

Success - At last!

This appears to have been a successful attempt to copulate. Notice that this time the male succeeds in landing on the females back AND that their tails come together. Ospreys don't take a long time over this and I think this attempt was a success. The literature on ospreys says that they may attempt copulation 50 to 60 times during the mating season, so the three times I have witnessed an attempt this spring should not be taken to suggest these were their only attempts at making baby ospreys.

Ospreys in the snow - April 22

I warned you! The snow came again in April and here are our ospreys, making the best of a cold spring.

May

May day was just like April Fool's Day with new snow on the nest!  The rest of the month was spent doing home renovations and getting ready for possible new ospreys.
