Barred Owl
I don't often see owls although there must surely be several along the road. This large barred owl was perched in the trees behind our house one day in March 2019. Never seen it since.
It was particularly interesting to see its effect on the birds and animals that come come to our bird feeder. After a moment of panic the small birds seemed to realize that this owl was no threat to them and the resumed their attack on the sunflower seed dispenser. The squirrels, on the other hand, did not recover until the owl had left. At one point the owl moved away from our line of sight but it must have been nearby because, all of a sudden, it swooped silently down and chased a squirrel that was madly running for its life. The owl was not successful on that occasion, but, to go by its size, it had certainly acquired some very good hunting skills!
